| HOOKED ON MUSIC (Germany)

"Chandelier" is Rachael Sage’s 8th album. Since her debut in 1996 she has delighted us with exceptional regularity. And once again she has spellbound us with a rich and varied bouquet of different musical styles. The changing moods range from wanderlust to a melancholy dreaminess. Typical Rachael. The video for the song “Vertigo” shows her in a fantasy world full of jugglers, clowns and magic. Rachael appears here as a young girl who is astonished and curious to encounter an environment she’s never seen before. She knows exactly what she’s doing here, though. She convinces us with her fragile Singer/Songwriter artistry. In the foreground is her piano playing, as usual, garnished with horns, strings and percussion. Rachael’s voice is enthroned above it all. A large ensemble of musicians put her fragile lyrics to music. Rachael compels us to listen repeatedly. At the same time, this music invites us to listen. Her complete greatness unfolds when one devotes one’s attention to her exclusively. Rachael’s stories tell of the little things in life. But isn’t it the little things that move us all? Love, loss, friendship. Several songs concern one’s own existence. Rachael challenges us to delve into our own thoughts. Or only listen to hers. While her previous effort "The Blistering Sun" was mostly lively, Rachael restricts herself to quieter sounds on this album. But this should absolutely not be considered to its detriment. No, "Chandelier" once again delivers first class Singer/Songwriter fare. With "Chandelier" Rachael Sage has released a great album. A very, very great album. It provides a quiet antidote to the loud and superficial world in which we find ourselves these days. A glass of strong red wine rounds out the treat. |
